Pre-Apartheid History
Jan Van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company came to the Cape of Good hope and established a colony where he and his employees resided. Some time after this, former employees of Riebeeck were laid off and left on their own in South Africa were they soon encountered the Khoikhoi tribe. The Dutch employees became known as "Boers" and farmed the land and later enslaved the natives. British came to the colony and resided starting conflict with the Boers. there were battles and wars fought between the British and Boers, the most famous being the "Anglo-Boer war". After this time, the Boers became known as "Afrikaners" and enslaved many of the natives. The British owned mines in South Africa, the Afrikaners supervised the mines, and the African natives worked in the mines. Decades later, these things changed, and blacks had more rights and freedoms, and were no longer enslaved. Blacks were treated indifferently, and this was the beginning of racial segregation in South Africa.
